Every time I speak to a group about goal setting, I hear a few people in the crowd mumbling, "not goal setting, I already know all about it". These are usually the ones that need goal setting the most. Don’t get caught in this trap of familiarity. Repetition is the mother of skills, and fundamentals must be practiced daily. The more you use goal setting, the better you get at it. The better you get at goal setting, the better control you have over your future.

What is the power of goals, and why do we need to use them? With goals we create the future in advance, we create our destiny, and we shape our lives. Goals can create the power to make us grow and expand. Goals help develop our success, and when done properly and specifically, they transform our lives. Several research studies have concluded that people who set clear defined goals are much more successful, both in the short run and long run, than those who do not.

Do you know why goals really work? Thoughts are things, and what you focus on you will experience. When you set a goal, a funny thing happens. Your mind realizes that where you are is not where you want to be. This dissatisfaction creates a pressure within us, and this pressure is essential in creating motivation to change something. This self dissatisfaction is the real secret of goal setting because it is human nature to avoid things that are painful or uncomfortable to us.

Don’t wait! Set your goals now for the new year. Be very specific. The more specific you are, the better goal setting works. I am a firm believer in goal setting. A few years ago, I set a goal to form a club to meet and network about Real Estate investing as well as a goal to learn to speak in front of that group. Well, as you can see, that goal is a reality today!
